Jennifer van der Ree is a consulting actuary with the Milliman Life and Financial Services practice based in London. She joined Milliman in 2010.
Jennifer has strong modelling experience, having spent a year working on Royal London’s Actuarial Systems Transformation (AST) programme, and prior to that 18 months on the Phoenix Group’s AST programme. During her time on these projects, Jennifer worked closely with the client’s modelling team and helped to develop the model in respect of the specific features of their products.
Jennifer recently worked on secondment at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) supporting its thematic review of the fair treatment of with-profits customers. This role included reviewing firms’ submissions to the FCA, conducting and supporting interviews with firms’ key individuals involved in the management of with-profits business, and identifying appropriate feedback as a result of the review.
Jennifer currently assists on a with-profits actuary supervisory role, which involves advising on the key areas of discretion, such as the appropriateness of the bonus recommendations, and ensuring fair management of the with-profits business.
Jennifer has acted as the lead consultant supporting the Independent Expert on a number of Part VII transfers. These roles involved assessing the impact of the transfer on the benefit security and fair treatment of affected policyholders.
Jennifer has worked on secondment at the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) providing support for a Part VII transfer involving two large UK insurers. This involved reviewing the documents submitted by the firms, including leading the review of the Independent Expert’s report and the various other reports from both a supervisory and actuarial perspective. Jennifer has been responsible for managing the review process with the supervision team and other PRA teams, managing queries through to resolution with the firms, liaising with the FCA, and drafting the PRA’s court reports.
Jennifer has supported a number of potential acquisitions on both the buy-side and sell-side, most recently supporting two separate acquisitions involving equity release mortgage assets.
Jennifer provides ongoing support to the chief actuary for one of Milliman’s regular valuation clients, and has also supported the actuarial function holder of an equity release provider, including designing and developing valuation and capital models for its equity release mortgages assets.
Jennifer’s other experience includes assisting with the run-off plan modelling for a with-profits insurer and using Bayesian networks and cognitive mapping techniques to enhance the risk reporting framework for a large Australian insurer.
